Read about the front page here.   Page two here.  Page three here.  Page four here.

On page four, there are four more pictures of Hughes along with two “articles” about his appeals court experience and Hughes answers to a set of questions sent him by the GOP.

The stuff about his appeals court work largely brags about writing an opinion denying an appeal to Derrick Todd Lee which feels the need to throw in the fact that Lee is now awaiting execution. It continues a somewhat creepy focus on capital punishment present throughout the fake paper. Louisiana was one of the few states still doing so when the US Supreme Court ruled you could not execute someone for a crime they committed as a juvenile. The focus on capital punishment makes me wonder where Hughes’ position would lie on that decision. Does he think we need to execute people for crimes they committed at 16? What about the mentally ill? What would he say if the US Supreme Court gets rid of all capital punishment later down the road?

When I read on to the questions the GOP posed to Hughes I see that his favorite current justices are Thomas and Alito. Picking Thomas is a lot like picking Scalia without saying it since they basically always vote together. The choice of Thomas reveals that he perhaps would say it is acceptable to use capital punishment when the offender was a minor at the time of the crime. In Roper v Simmons, where the court ruled that capital punishment was unconstitutional in those cases, Thomas joined in the dissent. More troubling than anything else in the fake paper is Hughes love of Thomas as Thomas’s voting record on the court is anti-woman, anti-gay, anti-healthcare, pro-unregulated dark money campaign finance, etc.

Hughes says that “sunshine is the best disinfectant” when answering a question about open meetings but favors the judicial opinions of a Justice who believes in no sunshine in campaign finance matters at all.
