My Coverage of the Louisiana Supreme Court District 5 Runoff and Jeff Hughes’ Fake Newspaper

First, I laid out how important of a decision faces voters on December 8th.

The Hughes- Guidry runoff will determine the direction of the Louisiana State Supreme Court. With Jindal’s voucher agenda being challenged and possibly headed that way, it seems crucial for the future of the state’s public education that Jindal endorsed Hughes not win.

Today I got in the mail a fake newspaper from the Hughes campaign. It is a bit amusing to me that I received it as I live in an overwhelmingly blue precinct so it seemed a bit wasteful to be sending out mailers to our precinct but Hughes’ campaign is very well funded so I guess they can afford to chase the couple dozen votes they may be able to get in the precinct.

The fake newspaper was full of fear mongering about liberals, some obvious race baiting, a strangely large number of pictures of Hughes, and a huge list of bio information about him that has nothing to do with his ability to serve on the court. The most important tidbit is that he strongly admires the decisions of Justice Thomas which to me is a resounding reason to not vote for him.

I uploaded the entire mailer to be viewed and have a separate discussion up for each of the pages.

If you want to see the Jeff Hughes State Supreme Court fake newspaper mailer I scanned, you can view the whole thing here.

The “paper” is labeled Louisiana Judicial Report. It is a publication of the Hughes campaign but with the Louisiana state seal in the top right corner it is trying pretty hard to look like an actual report and not a campaign mailer.

Jeff Hughes Supreme Court Mailer- Fake Newspaper

I got this fake newspaper for the Jeff Hughes Louisiana State Supreme Court campaign. I decided that since I wanted to write about it I would scan the whole thing. My scanner could only scan half of each page at a time so I had to reassemble them, sorry about the lines in the middle.

Articles about it to come. Whole mailer visible after the cut.  Read the rest of this entry »

Did the GOP Winning in the States in 2010 Lose Romney the Election?

In 2010 the GOP swept state legislatures and went wild.

Let’s look at four states where the GOP did things that made people very, very angry.

Virginia-

In Virginia, they passed a law requiring mandatory ultrasounds for any woman seeking an abortion. Even if she was a rape victim. It made Governor Bob McDonald into governor ultrasound and cost him his chance to be the VP pick. It also made women all over Virginia very angry and afraid for their freedoms.

Virginia is a swing state and it certainly can’t hurt the Obama campaign’s chances there for the state to be full of women who don’t trust the GOP one bit.

Michigan-

In Michigan, the GOP in the state pushed through a harsh emergency manager law. It essentially allows the state to dissolve local governments and replace them with an all powerful dictator. The law is leaving many people with no local representative that the voted for and is disproportionately effecting minorities.  It’s repeal is on the ballot on election day.

The turn out to repeal a law that takes away your local government and gives you a dictator who can dissolve your town’s very existence will surely be enormous and favor the president’s re-election efforts.

Wisconsin-

In Wisconsin, Scott Walker made a bid to strip collective bargaining rights from all state workers. There was outrage and protests in the state capital for weeks. Democrat state legislatures fled the state to delay the vote. The law was ultimately stopped.

While the effort to get rid of Walker as well was unsuccessful, (Partially I believe because Feingold didn’t throw his hat into the race) there is a lot of ground structure and labor organization there that benefits Obama.

Ohio-

In Ohio, they passed a law stripping labor rights. There was a huge fight back and it made the ballot through a signature campaign and by a 22 point margin worker’s rights were restored. Obama’s campaign staff was on the ground for the fight and it helped them to establish an astounding ground game in the all important state.

The Debates- Who Really Wins

There is this smile Obama sometimes does. It is a smile that makes me suspect that somewhere Axelrod is jumping up and down excited. I saw that smile a couple times when Romney was speaking last night. A few of the times, it was because Obama was about to come back to something Romney shouldn’t have just said. Other times the reason wasn’t apparent.

Today I think I may understand that reason a little better.
